This isn't an idea for a pattern, but it could turn into one. I don't believe I've ever seen a T-shaped 4-cell cage; like the Tetris piece. Any reason why? |

I immediately realized that this is because of my cage creation method: it starts at a point, then makes a random step, etc., until the required size is reached. I'll modify the algorithm soon so it creates more varied cages. I can't believe I didn't see this myself at some point, thanks much Patrick |

A cross-shaped cage would be interesting too. Like: a2b1b2b3c2 I can't think of any others off the top of my head that are more branched that would bring anything extra to a puzzle. Now that I've thought about it a little, a cross-shaped cage would lend itself to a nicely symmetric pattern puzzle. I think this is the type of code you use: a1 a2b1b2b3c2 c1d1 d2e1e2e3f2 f1 a3a4 c3d3 (or: c3c4, d3d4) (or: c3c4d3d4) (or something like: c3c4d3, d4) c4d4 (different ones may be useful to modulate difficulty) f3f4 a5b4b5b6c5 d5e4e5e6f5 a6 c6d6 f6 |

There is a cross shaped cage in one of the book puzzles......rating is: very difficult.....have tried to solve it once but had no success.....it's in the "black coloured book"..........Ken |

Ok, I've fixed up the cage generation algorithm. Starting May there should be more variety in the cages (I'm sure that certain puzzles will no longer "feel familiar" ) Here are two samples: |

Have you ever thought about using a mandelbrot equation to generate cage shapes? |

Here's another one, not easy (!) |

The last one was relatively easy, solved it by pure logic (no guessing) in a few minutes - subjecively I'd put it a 5x5 medium category. |
