Post Difficult 9x9 Tuesday April 4th 2023
I found yesterday’s 9x9 particularly tricky and have only just solved it now. I think what made it so difficult was the fact that there were a lot fewer than usual multiplication cages.

I was only the 44th person to solve it, compared to an average of 68 over the previous 4 weeks. So I guess I’m not the only one who struggled with this puzzle.

This was a puzzle only for subscribers though.

True. But it was also subscriber only on each of the four previous Tuesdays.

Ah, interesting, I hadn't checked that.

I should run some stats, see if yesterday's 9x9 was the most difficult ever [scared]

Actually, the last Tuesday's 9x9 open to not subscribers has been on Tue Dec 27th, 2022.
In 2023, until now, all 9x9 difficult on Tuesday have been for subscribers only [smile]

First of all, I have always liked this pattern.

After the initial set up, which I know Paul is capable of doing, I started working on the left four columns. Columns A through D.

I choose this because the sums were all known except known except for two cages. I learned that the sum of the 24X cage and the 2- cage (in rows 1 and 2) is 25. For whatever reason that I can't recall, that forces the 24X cage to be (4,3,2,) and the 2- cage to be (9, 6, 1).

Also that knowledge forces the 16OX, four cell cage to be (8, 5, 4, 1) not (5, 4, 4, 2). (This cage is in G2, H2, G3, H3).

There is more to it than those initial clues. But it is a start.

For what it's worth, I do struggle with puzzles at times. I don't usually post on here. I did write Patrick, rather than post here, when I struggled with one Fri difficult KS; it happened within the last four to six weeks. I had made an assumption that works with Calcudoku but not with KS puzzles. It took a number of tries of get me to give up that assumption.

BTW, You (Paul) have given me a clue or a different approach when the 9 X 9 pattern appears that I loath.

For all the readers, sharing our approaches, our solving strategies helps us all. I think it was CLM who wrote a lot about parity when I was figuring our the 7X7 subtraction only puzzle. Go back and read through old posts, ask questions about puzzles, after those puzzles are no longer worth points (my moral compass, not necessarily another's compass).

When I find some time I look forward to solve it [thumbsup]

Another tough one yesterday. Solved it just now and I’m number 48 to do so.

I wondered if others were struggling. It was a challenge for me, too.
