Post A2Z2
I recently acquired 121 Advanced Puzzles Volumes II and III and I've been working my way through the puzzles. Some of them are relatively straightforward, but a number of them are quite tricky and so far I've managed to solve around half the puzzles in Volume II. But I have become totally stuck trying to solve the above numbered puzzle, which appears on page 50 of the book.

I'm not looking for an explanation (or even hints on how to solve it), but I'm just wondering did others who purchased the book have similar difficulty with this puzzle. I've put it on a spreadsheet so that I can work on it without having to keep printing off copies and I'll post it here if that's OK with Patrick, but don't want to do so without his permission because of potential breach of copyright issues.

Sure, it's fine to post it.

For the record, 22 people have solved A2Z2 so far [woot]

Thanks Patrick

I tried to post it just now, but it lost all formatting. Can I save it as a PDF file and then post it?

By the way, is 22 an unusually low number for puzzles in that book?

It's at the low end. The warmup puzzles (of course), twins, single operator, and some of the other "from zero" puzzles had more solvers.

The smallest number (12) is for A2S13 (an 8x8 single operator mod puzzle [scared] )
Next (13) are A2G5 (11x11 using [-5, ..., 5]), A2V6 (9x9 using [-7, ..., 1]), and A2V10 (9x9 with mod, exponentiation, and bitwise OR [scared] ).

A2X11 (17x17) and A2E14 (10x10 with exponentiation) were solved 14 times so far (well, submitted for points 14 times so far).

I haven't tried any of the ones you mentioned yet. As I said elsewhere, I tend to struggle with the puzzles with negative numbers, but I'm determined to solve as many of the puzzles in the book as possible.

I've been trying to keep ahead of 2 a day since I got the books, but I've had to resort to doing some of the twin puzzles in book III in order to stay on schedule. I expect at some stage I'm going to run out of breathing space, but I'll keep going as long as I can.

It's now 23 (at least I think it is - I'll know for sure when I submit it in about 35 minutes from now)! I had another go at it, trying a particular combination for the 20x cage and managed to solve it relatively quickly. Not sure why it caused me so much difficulty previously, but I'm just glad I got there eventually.

I'm now down to my last 8 puzzles in Advanced Puzzles II and they include 5 of the 6 puzzles listed above. The other 3 are A2E15, A2V1 and A2X9. I've lost track of how many times I've attempted A2S13 - I don't know if I'll ever manage to solve it. [cursing]

I am also coming down to the final few puzzles. I am still missing A2X10 (I've scribbled giant x's over it in my annoyance), A2V10, A2V1 (Which I don't think I will ever solve without help), A2E13, A2G5, and A2E10.
Wow, I just realized that I have only 6 puzzles left. On the plus side, I recently got Volume 1, which I might already be more than halfway done with [biggrin]
