Post more on ratings and solvers
I was looking for a standalone Killer Sudoku solver, to compare it to mine,
and came across this one:
http://www.sudokuwiki.org/killersudoku.htm

(edit: if anyone knows of a standalone solver, please let me know)

Unfortunately not standalone, but it did have something useful: 5 example
puzzles, rated "Gentle", "Moderate", "Tough", "Diabolical", and "Extreme".

I ran all 5 through my solver, which classified them as follows:
"Gentle": a bit above Easy
"Moderate": Easy
"Tough": above Difficult
"Diabolical": Medium
"Extreme": above Difficult

I was impressed by the number of strategies listed that this solver can
apparently employ. (and by the way, the site does also have a daily kenken
and a kenken solver (!)).

I'll ask the site's author about their difficulty rating mechanism..
