Here is an example of a difficult killer sudoku which should be
reasonably difficult, but not as much as the recent very difficult ones
(also see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=326)

I'll solve it myself, but feedback is welcome :-)

I solved it, and agree that it is somewhat difficult, but not frustrating... That is, if one doesn't make any boneheaded mistakes.

Unfortunately, I made a math error (or a vision error?) early on and ended up starting over. I have trouble with the cages that cross the major divisions, such as the 11 cage crossing the lower left and lower center "houses." Almost immediately I saw that d7 = 1, but later on when attempting to fill in values in column c, I saw that 11 and entered 8 and 3 into c7 and c8, which obviously screwed things up royally. [angry]

Agreed. I was pretty happy with the "block moments" (times when you think
you can't go any further, but then you find something), and finished it in 20 minutes
or so, only to find two 4's in row 2 [blush]

In any case, I'll replace tomorrow's difficult killer with a puzzle like this one.

Wouldn't error checking tell you that something is wrong?

Yes it would.
Except I was solving it on paper [blink]

Oh yes, I forgot that some people do that.

Hey, sneaklyfox... please explain how any of us could have used error checking on a puzzle that was presented only as a screen shot above. I'd love to know! [tongue]
