Calcudoku.org appears to be 1000 days old today. Congratulations Patrick (and original members).

1000 days! [thumbup] <singing:> Happy birthday to you, happy birthday tooo youuu…

Maybe we should all show our appreciation by making a modest donation and/or nagging our local papers to carry Patrick's puzzles [thumbsup]

One sales point is that calcudokus are liked by a very international group of puzzlers/subscribers. Even the handful of original (1000-day) members are from such diverse places as Canada, the USA, the Netherlands and Israel.

Thanks :-)

I should write a short history of the site somewhere.

I wrote the original version on Tuesday, February 10th, 2009: I read about "kenken" in
the New York Times in the morning, liked the puzzle, and decided to try and create a site
(really a generator, solver, site code, database, etc.) in one day [blink]

By the evening I had a site (then at http://www.patrickmin.com/kenken) with puzzles in
three sizes (4x4, 6x6, and 8x8) and two levels ("Easier" and "Harder").

Found a screenshot on the "wayback machine":

(I was still using "kenken" there, at some point I got a "cease and desist" e-mail
from the trademark holder)

Some time in November 2009 people could submit their e-mail address after solving a puzzle,
in anticipation of an accounts system.
The accounts system started January 7th, 2010 (with first accounts for pnm (me), min (my dad),
cov, pcarless, mparisi, mpopeskov, amshamay, hopingcc, ...)

So the site really is 1331 days old :-)

Patrick

Congrats, almost four years, that's a real milestone. It's difficult to imagine the dedication and effort given to the page constantly improving the things. This a very specialized site (apart of the "commercial" aspect, which undoubtedly is important to support the page, i.e., like where inserting publicity to gain fans, etc.), so no problem if for a short while the number of puzzlers "apparently" diminish, it may be a symptom of a higher level but the quality is the final target, was Elmer Rice who said: "As the talent of an author increases the number of spectators decrease ... "?.

This is one of the neatest posts
"(my dad)"
An encouraging thought, from what I have seen our fearless leader Patrick really is a good person, never fails to be polite, never fails to try to be better, and the "(my dad)" is really sweet.

On March 22, 2009, my solver still had a bug (*cough*), so the puzzle
shown has in fact two solutions. It's pretty easy to figure out what they are...

So I should have waited 6 more days before writing that post :-)

Patrick,

I realize this is two days early but I'm not sure I'll be reading the forum then, so allow me to congratulate you now for constructing such an elite puzzling site that you will have managed to keep it active and engaging for 1337 days running. Now, when you hit the 31173 threshold the site will be truly elite.
