Post Re: Older users
At 72 I'm probably the oldest woman on the site

Would love to see a breakdown by gender as well as age. My guess is about 10% women, but who knows.

I try to spend only a couple of hours a day. I've given up on 12's and 15's because they take too much time, and I really really hate making mistakes and losing the time.

I don't feel terribly competitive about it all, since I'm aware, being down around #40 most days, that I'm pretty outclassed by those above me. I'm content with being a plodder, and just enjoy the activity.

Thanks for asking, Beaker. (As a fellow Canadian I see your scores every day.)

Once I accidentally reloaded the page while I was about halfway through a 12x12 [cursing] needless to say, I was a bit annoyed. Luckily, I have a very good memory and was able to remember many of the numbers - enough to finish the puzzle in rather little time. [thumbup]

I'm 55 years old, female.
It generally takes me 2-3 hours per day to solve all puzzles.
Once in a while, there's one that's really hard and turns into a big time sink. And the 15x15's tend to take me some time to do. I often do them across multiple sittings.

I would bet that most players are at least 35 plus. I am right in between 35 and 65. I would be a little curious as to how much time some of the big number players spend each day doing puzzles. I spend about 3 hours a day more or less.

Much later I realized that Google analytics provides some stats on the age breakdown of users.

For 2016 so far, this is as follows:

18-24: 8.1%
25-34: 13.1%
35-44: 14.2%
45-54: 17.6%
55-64: 22.6%
65+: 24.5%

(note that Google only knows/estimates age from people's Google accounts and/or their browsing behaviour.
For example, I'm pretty sure that are people younger than 18 puzzling, they're probably just harder for Google to track)

The next step is to compare these to age demographics of the western world, e.g. North America, July 2013:

0-14: 19.7%
15-44: 39.9%
45-64: 26.4%
65+: 14.0%

Western Europe:
0-14: 15.6%
15-44: 36.9%
45-64: 28.3%
65+: 19.1%

(numbers from this page: http://www.geohive.com/earth/population_age_1.aspx)

I haven't found data yet for the same age intervals. You can see from the numbers
that users are from all age groups [love], with the older generations represented a bit more [sleep]

Interesting stats. I was surprised at first to see that almost 50% of the players are estimated to be over age 55. Then, when I thought about it, I realised it isn't all that surprising.

I'm spending a lot more time on this site than I would be able to if I was still working. I'm not quite in the 65+ age group (but not that far off) and I discovered the site when I googled killer Sudoku having come across one by chance in a newspaper someone left on a flight from New Zealand (my wife and I were coming home at end February from a visit to our daughter). I started off slowly, became hooked and finally became a subscriber just over 2 weeks ago.

I'm probably spending too much time puzzling at present (particularly doing book puzzles - some of those 12 x 12s are especially irksome!), but I expect it will settle down when I've run out of book puzzles to do (unless I decide to buy more books!). Anyway, it looks like I'm somewhere around the 70th to 80th percentile in terms of age if those Google stats are to be believed.

And then there's me... a 13 year old boy completely outside of these age ranges [bored]

Marble, there is always an outlier [thumbup]

I agree with Paul. Older people tend to have the time for this. When I have real life interrupting, I can not do every puzzle. When real life intrudes, the Extra puzzles (and the 12 x 12s and Tues 9 x9) are put off for another day.

There are more younger players, they just don't show up in Google's stats.

For example, there are a handful of secondary school classes solving puzzles.

That is really cool! I would like to be in one of those classes [woot]
