Greetings to all.

I just discovered this web site and fell at once in love with the puzzles. Patrick suggested that I introduce myself. So, if you are not interested, blame him, not me!

I have always been interested in numerical puzzles and how to make computer play them. Already in 1979 (that gives you an idea of my... ahem... ripe age), I wrote a program in Assembly language for a Siemens machine to play a particular flavour of Master Mind (4 0-9 digits, no repetitions) that beat most human players. Much later, to learn Java, I programmed a web version of LandMines and of Daleks. You can still see the applets in my website http://giuliozambon.org. Then, last year, I got the "Sudoku flu" and wrote two books about Sudokus (the third book is almost ready; you can learn everything about them in my website http://zambon.com.au). One of them explain how to play Sudoku, and nthe other two explain how to write programs to automatically generate and solve Sudokus. The one already publish is in C and the one in the making is in Java. They are programming books, not books of puzzles. Finally, last year, I discovered KenKen/Calcudoku and started at once working on applications to generate and solve them. You will find a daily CalcuDoku page in http://zambon.com.au/daily/.

Sorry to barge in with a promotion as my first post, but I discovered this website precisely by looking for ways at promoting my new application...

This is a great website for CalcuDoku lovers. I have also developed a page with daily CalcuDokus (see http://zambon.com.au/puzzles/calcudoku/daily/). Although they are only standard 9x9s, they have a different "feel" from Patrick's puzzles and also from the original KenKens. You might like to try them.

Enough advertising. My next post will be about CalcuDokus. :D

Ok, so I'm writing this after I posted in the other thread.

I did today's 9x9 calcudoku from your site. (I did it using printscreen and then doing it in Paint.) It's a nice puzzle. Medium difficulty. On par with the 9x9 non-patterned puzzles on Patrick's site or some 9x9 book puzzles. To me it feels more or less the same.

Thanks for trying it out. Yes, it is a "standard" 9x9. Funny that you don't feel any difference. I believe I could distinguish between original KenKens a my CalcuDokus even just by looking at them. Anyhow, sooner or later, I will probably spice up my puzzles with some non-standard features. If/when I do it, this forum will be the first one to know!

Perhaps I'm just not very sensitive. But I also don't do the KenKen on their official site although I have tried it before. Reason for that is... I'm a Patrick fan! 8-)

Maybe you're more sensitive because you are the programmer. Also, consider that I've only done one puzzle on your site so far. But with respect to Patrick's standard 9x9 puzzles, I don't feel much difference, not to say there aren't any at all. Like, it seems that Patrick's 9x9s would generally have more bigger cages and maybe more single-cell cages. But I can't say for certain when I've only tried one GZ puzzle.

Sneaklyfox was referring to a CalcuDoku from my website http://zambon.com.au/puzzles/calcudoku/daily/, while I started this thread to say that I had released a CalcuDoku application for the iPad (incidentally, you can now try it out as CalcuDokuFree).

He must have taken a snapshot image of the puzzle and used Paint to write on it with the mouse. I assume that he wanted to write his choice of candidates on the screen, which is not possible on my website.

In any case, to have larger numbers with Sneaklyfox's way of solving the puzzle, you would have to enlarge the snapshot image. That wouldn't necessarily make the numbers more readable, though, and I don't know whether Paint can resize an image.

Two things:
1) I don't do the candidates thing (as seen on my videos on YouTube). I just use two different colours on Paint to indicate the same as a white cell or bolded green cell, right mouse button or left mouse button respectively.

2) I'm 4 months pregnant and therefore I cannot be a "he". [biggrin]

Gee, Sneaklyfox, my apologies. I am one of the least sexist people you can imagine, but, somehow, my default concerning mathematical puzzles remained stuck to the stereotype of a nerdy young bloke! Thanks for pointing it out. [smile]

No offense taken (and I don't think you're sexist). I know there are some other gals out there doing calcudokus but I also tend to assume everyone else is a guy because that's just the world we live in. Anyway I got used to a predominantly guy's world back in my university days...

If Giulio see the videos of Sneaklyfox on Youtube, immediately he would conclude "he" is a "she".
But now it would be interesting more colleagues present themselves as "shes". We stay in expectation of other ladies.
