the site's Google Adsense account has been disabled
For quite some time there have been Google ads on the puzzle page (one
on the puzzle page, and one on each ranking page).

A while back there were more ad clicks than usual: from some user's email
and looking at the stats I saw that most of these came from "touch" devices
(e.g. iPhone, iPad, etc.). I was working with one user to try and fix this. However,
a bit later my Google Adsense account was disabled. I appealed, explaining
the situation, and disabled ads for touch devices completely.

After more than 6 weeks I got a reply: the appeal was denied :-(

I just sent this reply to Google, but given the fact that so far I've only gotten
automated form letters, I have no illusion that anyone will ever read it :-(

----------------------------

Hello,

This is very frustrating. I've put an enormous amount of time and work into
my site, and it is clearly a site with valuable content. It is more important to
me that users of the site have a good experience than that I receive a lot
of advertising income.

That's why I didn't do anything with the repeated suggestion sent to me by
Adsense to put 3 ads on every page ("We’ve noticed that you’re running less
than three ad units on 484 of your pages on calcudoku.org.
We recommend that you add any of our top performing units (336x280,
300x250, 728x90 or ...").

That's why I was busy trying to figure out why iPad users experienced accidental
clicks on ads (I received a few complaints from iPad users). I've now disabled all
ads for touch devices.

Also, when I received an e-mail from Adsense requesting that the ad be put at
least 150 pixels away from the puzzle, I implemented that immediately.

It is unpleasant to read that my account has been disabled by a system:
all communication from Google are form letters, there's never a risk of a dialogue.

I understand that Google is very large, and that it can afford it to communicate
poorly, and to disable accounts without much consideration. However, in my
opinion in this way Google will lose a lot of goodwill.

I hope that one way or another it will become clear that a person has read this e-mail.

Best regards,

Patrick Min

There are alternatives for Google adsense, for example:

chitika
Microsoft adCenter
Yahoo Publisher Network

Thanks for the pointers. I've looked into a couple of alternatives while
my appeal was running, but haven't found anything suitable yet.

What I want is:
- no annoying ads (e.g. popups)
- no scammy ads (e.g. weight loss)
- reasonable revenue

Still, I'm pretty annoyed that I've lost the Google ads account. Apparently
it's "for life", so whatever site I have/create, I can't use it anymore.
(so for example, I also lost the ads on my
linux tips pages).

How about a premium account?
I'll pay 1 euro/month for a advert free site.
And to make it more attractive, give premium users more puzzles, even its only 1/day (15x15 once a week?).

Yes, that's another good idea I've been thinking about.
And then definitely "premium account" holders would get more puzzles.

I'd probably go really low on the number of premium user points, though, since that'll drive off people who wouldn't do it unless it's free.

That said, I'd be calling my parents to figure out a way to pay for this if it did happen.

There'd have to be an easy way to show the rankings of all / premium users only / regular users only

I'm too in agreement with that. And those additional puzzles must count to the rankings. But only puzzles of dimension 12 and 15.

At this moment I don't know if I understood completely the proposition of Arjen. We pay one euro/month and in exchange for, these subscribers receive addictional puzzles? If this is so I'm interested and I wish to be advised when ( if ) it begins.

Because the main page ads from "adbrite" and "pulsepoint" were giving me problems
(or rather, it seemed to break the page for certain users)(most of them are disabled
now, as non-subscribers will have noticed), I thought I'd give Google another try,
and put in a new appeal (after all, it has been a year, and there is no "suspicious activity"
on the site)(which is why my account got cancelled in the first place).

Sadly, less than 24 hours later (orders of magnitude faster than last time (!)):

"However, after thoroughly re-reviewing your account data and taking your feedback into consideration,
our specialists have confirmed that we're unable to reinstate your AdSense account."

That's what you get from the black box that is Google [sad]
