Post subject:  "cookie consent"

It looks like I finally have to comply with the "EU cookie law", in my opinion a great waste of time and money.

Imagine the endless meetings, paperwork, testing, programming, etc. to come up with a law that mainly
hurts sites that comply [mad]

So some time soon visitors from the EU will see some kind of "cookie consent mechanism". The law is about
the right to refuse the storing of "cookies" (= files that store information related to the site on your PC).

My site, for example, stores in cookies:
- the language you use
- the preferred cell size (small/medium/large) for each puzzle size
- if you use the new number pad, and its position
- whether you have the cells of the Killer Sudoku coloured or not
- an identifier that enables you to stay logged in

So as mandated by law, you can now choose to not have this stored.
edit: it looks like cookies that are required for the "technical functioning of the site" are ok,
this is only for the tracking cookies in the ads.

Of course, if you're not a subscriber you see ads, and they use "tracking cookies" (so Google knows which sites you visit).

If I don't comply, I risk using my Google advertising income.
Google themselves is experimenting with methods to track users without using cookies (which is perfectly possible).

*sigh* [sad]

This is now the message I have set up (it's not live yet):

I still have to translate this into the site's languages [glare]

So sadly now this box becomes part of the millions of other "Ok, go away" boxes polluting the internet [sad]

I'm hoping the EU will soon come up with new laws that cover browser fingerprinting, installing software, and so on
(we need more popups).

I live in the US.

I just saw this dialogue box. I guess I thought it would only be for European puzzlers.

I just received it, too. Also a USer.

On top of that I received it when the 8x8 timed loaded. Even if we do end up seeing this outside the EU, I'd humbly request that the dialog box not appear on timed puzzles. [tongue]

Hm, I'm using a library for this, I guess this means they don't do localization..

I'll leave it as is for now, I do want Google to approve the mechanism (and not disable it for the US,
then for some reason they test it from the US, etc.. [glare] )

I put in tons of effort to get the 'cookie consent' stuff up and running (including providing it in 5 languages),
then I get the response from Google: I have to describe why I use cookies (and I do ??!!), and that "certain
information is shared with third parties".

I'm guessing that Google shares info with 3rd parties, and I have to ask for consent ?

Anyway, I'm fed up with this, I'll ditch Google ads and analytics (even though this will end up costing me thousands
in lost advertising income).
