February puzzel-Red Cross tribute
As requested I am proud to present to you a puzzle, tribute to the International Red Cross. I selected the easiest one out of a series of this particular mosaic. (edit by Patrick: download a PDF version from this link) Tomorrow I will present the hardest one found, especially for CLM. By klaas1952 at 2012-02-01 Enjoy this puzzle! Re: February puzzel-Red Cross tribute
Hi Nicow.
Thank you very much for the 16x16 puzzle of February. Only a suggestion: the values of the cages must be, in my opinion, better placed ( as the New Year puzzle ), not occupying the whole cell. And the solution of that puzzle you said put it in the end of January? I'm a little distant from the " high competition " on account of my troubles with the site, but it is always welcome such puzzles. If the 9x9 puzzle is the mother of all puzzles, the 12x12 is the father and the 16x16 the grandfather.

Re: February puzzel-Red Cross tribute
looks fantastic!
I'll run it through my visualizer and create a cleaner version...
FYI, my solver rates this puzzle as being fairly easy (single solution found, all options tried, in 0.33 sec (!))

It's OK to maximise visibility, Patrick! Especially for CLM the hardest puzzle in this series: Uploaded with ImageShack.us Note: these puzzles have only one solution. There is no need for searching: only logic will do. Enjoy! Plus the description of this very difficult puzzle: 16 20,+,a1a2 35,+,b1c1d1 13,e1 630,x,f1e2f2g2 48,+,g1h1h2i2 550,x,i1j1j2 3,k1 128,x,l1l2 10,+,m1n1 9,+,o1p1 6,b2 69888,x,c2b3c3d3c4 8,d2 4,x,k2k3 14,m2 58,+,n2m3n3o3n4 13,o2 11,+,p2p3p4 15,+,a3a4 10,+,e3f3 10,g3 165,x,h3i3 7,j3 7,+,l3l4 11,b4 6,d4 600,x,e4f4g4 70,x,h4i4h5 1620,x,j4k4j5k5 16,m4 14,o4 16,x,a5b5 143,x,c5d5 280,x,e5f5f6 5,+,g5g6 33,x,i5i6 15,+,l5k6l6 104,x,m5m6m7 14,+,n5n6 34560,x,o5o6p6o7 14,p5 12,a6 18,x,b6c6 1680,x,d6e6d7e7 8,h6 36,x,j6j7 910,x,a7b7a8 3,c7 77,x,f7g7 660,x,h7g8h8 390,x,i7i8j8 16,x,k7l7 14,n7 2880,x,p7o8p8o9 31,+,b8a9b9a10 9,+,c8c9 17,+,d8d9e9 19,+,e8f8 15,k8 840,x,l8m8m9 22,x,n8n9 15,f9 126,x,g9h9h10 128,x,i9j9i10 140,x,k9l9 715,x,p9o10p10 130,x,b10a11b11b12 16,c10 180,x,d10d11d12 104,x,e10f10 18,x,g10g11 17,+,j10k10 32,+,l10m10l11m11 10,n10 70,x,c11c12 28,+,e11f11e12 224,x,h11h12 9,i11 80,x,j11j12 1144,x,k11k12l12 48,x,n11o11 15,p11 15,a12 1872,x,f12g12f13g13 252,x,i12h13i13 9,+,m12n12 28,x,o12p12 1344,x,a13a14a15 15,b13 41,+,c13b14c14d14c15 14,d13 8,x,e13e14 27,+,j13k13l13 11,m13 25,+,n13m14n14o14n15 1,o13 90,x,p13p14 168,x,f14f15 15,g14 7,+,h14i14 13,j14 77,x,k14l14 4,b15 7,d15 22,+,e15e16 41,+,g15g16h16 1792,x,h15i15i16j16 36,+,j15k15l15k16 5,m15 11,o15 9,+,p15p16 10,+,a16b16 55,x,c16d16 9,f16 2,l16 600,x,m16n16o16

Tomorrow I will present the hardest one found, especially for CLM. Very gentle, thank you very much, and thanks for the new puzzle; of course I will try solving this (it looks doable) and any other you provide in the future (I encourage you to continue with this generation though I know the work that it represents, only preparing and correcting the attached code takes a lot of time), I enjoy a lot solving calcudokus (some times even driving, not looking to the printout of course but "mentally" like in the "blind games" in chess). As soon as I have the solution I will give you my comments on this International Red Cross puzzle (today perhaps I will be a little busy but I hope to advance it tomorrow). P.D.: I am thinking in the possibility of generating calcudokus without any individual cell, in other words, giving the necessary individual numbers, shown in big characters inside the cages, I have never seen anywhere this type of presentation (kenken, nytimes, giuliozambon, 321monkey, etc.) but I think it could be another aspect of the calcudoku and probably a little different way of thinking. What's your opinion as a programmer?.

Especially for CLM the hardest puzzle in this series: My solver confirmed a single solution, after about 8 minutes and 25 seconds... Download a PDF of the 2nd puzzle herePatrick

Re: February puzzel-Red Cross tribute
I solved also the hardest Red Cross 16x16 puzzle. More difficult than the first one of this series of course but not in the proportion shown by the computer (more than 8 minutes...!) in my opinion. Very curiously I arrived to an identical point when placing the two final numbers of the puzzle (c14 = 5 and d14 = 16) in the "41+" red cross (in fact the red crosses are filled practically at the end; if the process of solution of the computer could be stopped in an intermediate point and display the numbers found by the software to that moment it would be interesting to observe if the computer follows a similiar way to a human, in this case the red crosses should be practically empty almost at the end). In this puzzle the 7's and 14's are very relevant for determining the rows 5, 6 and 7,... . Also the cage "41+" (g15-g16-h16) is an important key. Thank you again.

Re: February puzzel-Red Cross tribute
clm wrote: I solved the first Red Cross 16x16. More difficult in the beginning (as usual with the big puzzles) but when you have around the 35% or the 40% it goes more quick with the aid of the individual cells provided (probably for this reason the computer took 0.33 secs). In the process I followed the red crosses were determined in an advanced phase of the solution, in fact I placed the two final numbers of the puzzle (the 2 and the 4, row 14) in the "44+" red cross. Very amused and esthetically well conceived, alternately you could have coloured in red the four central cages (12 cells) simultaneously showing a big Red Cross. A suggestion for Patrick for the next's year Christmas puzzle : ..X ..X .XX XXX ..X , an 8-cell cage in the center of the puzzle, or four smaller green trees in the corners.

Re: February puzzel-Red Cross tribute
I am a little surprised at the apparent low interest (comments on the solutions, etc. ... ) on these two beautiful 16x16 "Red Cross" puzzles provided by nicow.
