Post Confused about weekly stats
Patrick, I was confused as to how mparisi total points for the 7 day went from 25 points approx less than mine to 35 points approx more than my total in one day??
The stats in question are for 3 march. I thought i saw a similar thing last week.

When exactly did you see this? Right after midnight?
(I'm asking because the daily updating of the 7 day scores runs as a "slow process", so
not all totals are updated at the same time)(it takes about 20 minutes in total)

Patrick i looked 10 am est.
For the past week I have been ahead on points & I am completing all puzzles, 3 points for timed & 5 points a day for book puzzles.
This morning I looked at stats & noticed.

It was indeed an error, and looks like a bug :-(
mparisi's total has been updated now, I'll try
to find out if there's an error somewhere..

Thanks for letting me know,

Patrick

I think it may have been a "race condition" (!)
(term from concurrent programming):

mparisi solved a puzzle, then:
1) current total is retrieved from the db
2) the "recompute weekly points" process updates the total in the db
3) new total is computed, and db is updated (!)

I've put in a fix by doing (I hope..) proper database table locking
whenever a new solution is entered. So in an ideal world this'll
never happen again :-)

Hmm... how about tom on 7-day ranking... another bug or similar problem? I don't even know where he was yesterday but today he's like 50 points more than me. Maybe whatever was changed didn't exactly fix everything.

Hm, I thought I had fixed the problem :-(

I corrected the total, and will check again...

I think I have observed occasionally those "blunder points" only in the 7-day punctuation that dissappear after 24 hours; it looks related, on thursdays and sundays, to the special (72 hours time for the solution) 12x12's; it might be related to the exact instant you solve it with respect to the instant you had solved the equivalent 12x12 7 days ago, that is, for instance, if you solve the 12x12 at 03:00 on a thrusday 8 and the next 12x12 on thursday 15 is solved at 02:00 (before completing the 168 hours period for the 7-day). Though one could think that it would only affect to 16 points and not to the whole punctuation of one day, but the jump is really high and can not be explained with the 12 points of a book solution (I may have a wrong impression though I would revise the routine for the 12x12's).
No problems with the golden star with the 12x12 (you must solve it within the day is published to get the star that day, right?).

Still not sure how this thing works as rickt has like 650ish points. Shouldn't it be updated when the "day" changes? And if it's a slow process, it should be all updated within the first half hour of the day changing. This happened a few days ago too.
