Re: Method: Guessing
If you read a few posts back, I stated somewhere that anything in solving a calcudoku can be turned around to be considered 'guessing' and everything can be turned around to be considered 'logic'.

Point is, most logic in calcudoku is based on 'this isn't possible because there would be two 3s in this row' or something close to that. You can define that as guessing ('I put a 6 there, and I'll fill the puzzle in.... Oh there's two 3s in that row, then the 6 is wrong.'), or as logic. Whatever suits you.

I defined guessing as filling in a number without knowing if it's correct.

Yes, except when it's used the same as a pencil-in. That is, you know the number goes in the cage but not exactly which box in the cage.

Re: Method: Guessing
I'm using Excel for the > 6x6 puzzles.
For example 9x9 from 27 may:

Right colum, x16 = 2 x 8 and 3 is a known value.
Possible ranges for
+16:
1 6 9
4 5 7

+11:
4 7
5 6

Code:
Copy/paste column:
+16:         +16:
1  6  9      1  6  9
4  5  7      4  5  7
+11:         +11:
4  7          4  7
5  6          5  6

Remove "5 6" in first column and "4 7" in second column by +11 ranges:
+16:         +16:
1  6  9      1  6  9
4  5  7      4  5  7

+11:         +11:
4  7
5  6

Remove invalid +16 ranges:
+16:         +16:
1  6  9

+11:         +11:
4  7
5  6

Note that I still have to figure something out for those "facebook placeholder names"
(in this case "fb_1124").

In the meantime, you can let me know which alias you prefer

Best way I've found to solve bigger puzzles and that's "green" at the same time is to use an excel spreadsheet. It also helps when I have a large multiplication number and want to figure out what it's divisible by.

Re: Method: Guessing
I just thought of a method about guessing that I use all the time, but I don't think anyone has mentioned yet.
It is guessing wrong. What I mean by this is when I guess(in the big puzzles), I try to choose the number that would be least likely in order to eliminate that #. Might seem illogical, but who wants to go all the way back to the beginning of the chain of logic and remember the first guess?

"Guessing wrong" isn't illogical but makes perfect sense. When you feel that you must guess, the object is to eliminate one of two choices as quickly as possible. This also avoids making a guess upon guess.
