It's buried near the end of the explanation text: hold down the Shift key + a number
to "pencil it in" as a guess.

I guess that is too much for this old computer.......pushing the shift key causes the entire puzzle to shift position!!!

Patrick's method for "pencilling in" numbers does work when I use the row of number keys above the letter keys. But I encounter the same problem as beaker does when I use the number keys on the numeric keypad at the right side of the keyboard (in Firefox 17.0.1 on Windows Vista). It seems like the keys on the numeric keypad are in some way "interpreted" as arrow keys even though NumLock is on.

Thanks for the suggestion but "no go"......using the numbers above the letters results in no shifting but no numbers either!!!

In any case I need to find a more general solution for "reading the keyboard".
There have been issues in the past with international keyboard (e.g. Spanish) sending
different codes for the same keys. And recently someone wrote to me about issues
with a German keyboard.

Hello everyone,

I want to compliment you, Patrick, on all of your fine work on the pencil feature. From the time it first appeared I have found it very useful. Now that it's been fine-tuned I'm amazed that I can solve so many of the puzzles online (even some 9x9s!) that I used to have to copy into my photoshop program and solve laboriously with a lot of copying and pasting of numbers.

Thanks again, and happy holidays.
