Post subject:  June 9, 2014 9x9: multiple solutions?

Isn't there supposed to be only one possible solution?
I think I found two solutions to this puzzle and can't see a way to resolve to a single solution.
The 2 rows in question are the 5th and the 9th.
Solution 1:
the solution given by the website
Solution 2:
row 5: 947538126
row 9: 169742385
Can anyone clear up my dilemma? Thank you.

It's the "1-" cage at e5f5e6

(the solution 3, 2, 6 works, but not your alternative 3, 8, 6)

Thank you for the reply, Patrick.

My numbers 3, 8, 6 do yield 1 if the order of subtraction is 6 - (8 - 3).

Please expand your reply. Is there a Calcudoku rule regarding order of subtraction, based on magnitude of the integers?

PS I really enjoy your site and appreciate the time you spend challenging us daily. Thank you.

Subtraction cages don't use parentheses. Generally just subtract in order of descending magnitude. You'd never see an 8, 6, 3 subtraction cage because the results are always positive.

No, there's no ordering rule, there just has to be an ordering for which the target result is produced.

No parentheses are used though.

(that'd be an idea for a new puzzle type, the clue would show "1(-)" which would mean there can be
parentheses in arbitrary places [scared] )

That is an arbitrary restriction also, really.

So get busy:

Yeah, I just didn't want to further confuse the issue. :P

Interesting puzzle, but the inverse order is kinda pointless in the 2-cell subtraction cages. Makes those 3-cell sub cages more intriguing, however.

So that didn't throw you off, did it? [wink]

But you're right, those are a bit silly, especially now everyone's used to the positive difference [mellow]
