Re: 8x8 timed
I was only suggesting it for the 8x8 ......I sure could have used it for the 6x6 today as I had a great time only to find that I had two 5's side by side and could not see it for quite awhile!!!

I got my 11th best time today and while in the top 25, not in the top 10. (Time 3:2?). I remember when I got my best time, 3:4? and did not make it in the top 10. This was before top 25 got an extra point.
I have also had recent times in that were 7:?? and been in top 25.
This may be where we remember the unusual events - Bad times that get us two points or great times that only get us two points. I thought that too, so I have been keeping track of my times and placings since early March. I can never hope to get close to top 25 in the 4x4, but I have managed 4 top 25s over that period in both the 5x5 and 6x6. In the 8x8, I've had 6 top 10s, 54 in the 11 to 25 range and 13 outside the top 25. 5 of those 13 have come in the last two weeks! This includes the 6:20 I did last Sunday. On April 19th and 20th, I had two top 25s with times of 9:06 and 9:04 respectively! So there is a lot of variation from one day to the next and I sometimes wonder if Patrick has the option of tweaking the difficulty level from day to day. Anyway, the bottom line is that my scores are getting worse and this is probably due to a combination of slower times (maybe I'm rushing too much and therefore making mistakes) and more/faster puzzlers taking part. In relation to the number of people completing the 8x8, this has varied from a low of 27 to a high of 39, but there hasn't been much of a general upward trend in this regard. As you can see from the above, I have far too much time on my hands and need to find something else to occupy me!

I am starting to regain some of my leisure time and it feels very good. I think the variation with difficulty is just do to to randomness. I think Jpoos ran out of the original 10 K puzzles that Patrick had loaded into they system. I did not realize that so few players do the timed 8 x 8. I know there was one non subscriber who really wanted to test their skills on the 8 x 8. Patrick had to inform that person the timed 8 x 8 was going to remain a perk of being a subscriber.

Re: 8x8 timed
Wow! This is getting really scary! My time of 5:46 yesterday was not good enough for top 25 and there were 29 times in total under 6 minutes.

Re: 8x8 timed
Had a much better day yesterday and was in the top ten for most of the day, but finally finished 12th. I also had my 9th best time ever for the 5x5 and it wasn't even good enough for top 30!

Unscientific Average Cutoffs for Top 25 (error is probably +/- 10%): 4x4: ~10s 5x5: ~30s 6x6: ~1m 8x8: ~5m Looks like I knocked you down a peg yesterday - I finished 11th on the 8x8. Sorry, and not so sorry, about that.

Here's a plot of the 8x8 top 10 cutoff time over the past year: There may be a slight downward trend here.

At first I was wondering how Patrick got an EKG of my accelerated heart rate when solving timed puzzles. But then I noticed the downward trend so I know that wasn't right. Seriously though, these are interesting graphs. Not only do we as individuals have fast and slow days, that holds for the group as a whole as well.
