65% or top 100?
In another thread, Patrick mentioned that he was considering changing the "Average of 65% best times" listing to "Average of 100 best times". His idea was that you don't see much shift in your average once there are many, many data points. Every time you break your personal top 100 the average would shift more than when you place within your personal top 65%. A counter-argument would be that as you complete more and more puzzles it may become harder and harder to place withing your top 100. Currently I've completed around 450 puzzles of each size so my top 100 will be my top 22%. And obviously that %-age will diminish over time. So with the 65% listing I have a better chance of having soem impact on my average on any given day, even if that effect is only to shift if by 1/100th of a second.
At the time I stated a preference for the 65% version, but I realized later was that thing I liked was knowing my 65th percentile time as a benchmark. Going into the timed puzzles I attempt to beat the 65% average. And failing that I attempt to beat that 65% time - not the average, but the actual time shown in the formula just above the table. So:
1) Do you prefer the "65% best" or the "top 100"
2) What if, upon completion of a timed puzzle, Patrick added a line of text to show where the current time ranks in your overall history? Something like, "174.902 seconds is your 65% best completion time to date".

Re: 65% or top 100?
1) I have no preference right now. And even though you would have more effect with the 65% average, the time is better for top 100 after you've completed many puzzles.
2) I like that idea of showing how your time for a puzzle ranks in your personal overall times. We could also show how it compares to all timed puzzles completed by all users.

I am really liking the new info displayed on the timed puzzles main page! When it tells me that I just posted a time in my top 100 I know I did well!
