That is really useful for those of us who have not been around for 5+ years.

And everybody starts at ZERO soon !! [scared]

I'm really not sure there would be enough return on effort to make this worth while, but it might be interesting to see final rankings for prior years. People whose puzzle solving heyday was in 2015 or 2016 might like to see that. [wink] [blush]

Post Re: Rankings by year
For myself, apparently I am the 4th / 5th ranked non-member on this metric (it is close for 4th / 5th spot). Some of the non-members above me have probably been members before (they have results for the 8x8, which is now not accessible to non-members). For me it is good to see that I am doing much better at present than my current global all time ranking (385 or something) suggests. Even if I'd have as good a 2019 as 2018, I'd struggle to break into the top 270 at the start of 2020.

And I have been around for nearly 2 years now. It is even much worse for people who have hardly started. So it is definitely useful to have the these rankings around.

As for yearly rankings, I think the yearly points totals get calculated in the personal history. I don't think it would be that hard for Patrick to generate global yearly results for say 2015, 2016 or 2017 (for example) once, and make the outcomes accessible to everyone - it will not require the results to be computed every time they are requested, since the results are already final. So in terms of server load and all that, the cost would be nearly 0. Whether Patrick then chooses to use a forum post to post the rankings for any particular year, or a separate page with rankings for each year is up to him.

I'm looking forward to the start of the year and seeing how the standing change in the first few weeks. I do have one questions. Will 2018 extra puzzles solved in 2019 be counted in 2018 or 2019? That will affect things early on.

I don't think you should be allowed to carry extras from 2018 forward into 2019......I think the concept is that you start the new year with zero with no hidden possible points from another year plus no book puzzles should be counted......only the day to day puzzles should be counted for the year while any other points accumulated would simply go on your total score to date!!

You make a good point, thanks,
will probably make it so points from 2018 extra puzzles don't count towards 2019.

I may have to adjust the current 2018 points as well for the same reason.

This raises the question as to whether any of the other interval rankings should be changed. I would hope not.

I think that the roller coaster effect that stored points induces on the 7 day rankings is amusing and that it is fun for someone occasionally briefly to rise to a higher ranking or point total than they would normally be entitled to.

I don't have a strong opinion about the 30 day rankings.

It would make no sense to change the all-time rankings.

Well, that messes up my cunning plan to hold off submitting the next three extra puzzles until the New Year! :-)

Seriously though, that seems like a lot of extra trouble. For one thing, it means that final rankings for 2018 could not be published until end January 2019 in order to ensure that all extra puzzles from 2018 have been taken into account. Does it really matter if someone decides they would like to hold back submitting a few puzzles in order to give themselves a head start on the 2019 rankings? It's not as if there is prize money or a trophy at stake.

You could argue that solving saved extra puzzles from 2018 gives an unfair advantage
compared to people who subscribe (early) 2019 ?

edit: this has been changed now (so extra puzzles of 2018 don't
count towards the "year to date" total of 2019)

Absolutely! But it's not really a competition, is it? If you're prepared to go to the trouble of excluding extra puzzles dated 2018 from the 2019 totals, then I don't think anyone would have any reason to object. But I also think it's probably unnecessary, so I wouldn't spend a huge amount of time doing extra programming in order to achieve this, if I was you.
