Happy Canada Day Beaker!

I have to confess that I’m one of these ‘salivating dogs’ to which you refer. For me, a large part of the satisfaction that I get in solving a puzzle is the fact that I earn points for doing so. I was one of the people who has been asking for a new puzzle to celebrate reaching 21 million puzzles solved, and I was doing so in the expectation that I would earn a massive 21 points for solving it. And you are of course correct in surmising that I would also welcome a 22x22 puzzle in a few months time, but I appreciate the fact that as the size of the puzzle increases, it becomes increasingly difficult to produce puzzles that satisfy all the criteria.

I would assume that the additional work involved in making this puzzle eligible for points would be minuscule compared to the work involved in generating the puzzle. But it’s Patrick’s website and it’s entirely up to him how he runs it and if he chooses not to allocate points, then I will have to accept that decision.

However, I suspect that a large proportion of the people who solve puzzles on a regular basis on this website are at least partly motivated by seeing the points rack up and will be disappointed if no points are awarded for solving this particular puzzle. The number of sudoku puzzles solved each day is evidence of the extent to which people are motivated by earning points for solving puzzles. The medium sudoku, which is worth 2 points, is solved by more than 400 people each day on average. The easy sudoku, worth zero points, by fewer than 200 on average.

Anyway, that’s my 2 cents worth on the subject.

All good points Paul, however I was just referring to the extra puzzles......not the dailies, because I do them for the satisfaction (if I am good enough to solve it) and. I do like the dailies points......l guess I am just jealous and [cursing] that this old brain (soon to be 76) just cannot handle most 10x10s or any others >10......so I will continue to do as much as I can while watching the users who can do any puzzle with envy

I hope you’re enjoying Canada Day beaker. What kind of celebrations do you have?

I’m probably a bit too obsessed with this site and with scoring as many points as possible. I’ve already reached the point where my manual dexterity cannot keep up with the youngsters on the timed puzzles. 5 points is a good day for me and 6 point days are few and far between.

But I can still churn out the daily puzzles, although some days are more difficult than others. I’ve managed to keep a ‘clean sheet’ since the beginning of last year and I plan/hope to keep this streak going for as long as possible. I regard any additional points as a bonus and look forward to any opportunities to earn them.

I’d like to think that I’m not alone in this. I think it’s probably fair to say that most regular puzzles are fairly numerate, or at least fairly comfortable working with numbers. It probably follows from this that most regular puzzlers take an interest in their overall points tally.

I generally agree with Paul V66, I think like you, it's funnier when we can earn points and I like to have a recap of my solved puzzles

I would suggest to assign a code to this type of puzzles (even when they do not score points, done for simple pleasure [smile]), that would help to quickly verify if you found the correct solution.

I suppose a single row would go a long way,
maybe not theoretically guaranteeing you have the right solution,
but what are the odds ..

edit: by the way, your row 21 is correct [thumbup]
