Dividing by a larger number
Hello all I'm new to this site, just started a week ago. Love the simplistic website layout In puzzles that contain the division operator is it permissible to divide by the larger number ie. in a L-shape-3-cell to arrive at 8, 2/4=.5 then 4/.5=8

There is a button at the bottom of the puzzle that implements an auto-correct on the puzzle(continuous error check). If you are ever unsure of the rules this will help you.

Yes, I'm aware of the auto-check feature. I just want some insight into the depth of logic to be used in a given circumstance. I wouldn't want to waste time by running through a bunch of invalid scenarios in the future.

The operations work as if there are no groupings(parenthesis)

In a división you must take the larger number and then divide it successively (no particular order) by the other numbers in the cage to arrive to the result shown, so "8:" in a 3-cell L-shape cage is only possible with [1,1,8] (up to the 15x15 puzzle of course since, i.e., in a 16x16 puzzle you would also have the combination [1,2,16]).

I'm not aware of an explicit rule requiring that intermediate results be integers, but I do think there is an implicit understanding that this is the case. If 4 "doesn't divide" 2 in a two-cell cage then 4 "doesn't divide" 2 in a three-cell cage either. And anecdotally, I've never seen a puzzle where this wasn't true.

Thanks for the help. 'clm' and 'jaek' both got to the heart of the matter. Jaek's explanation in particular is very insightful. That will help with further puzzle solving.

I think the site deals with only whole numbers (ie: not numbers with decimals)
