I've been toying with the idea of adding "achievements" to the site (like for example on chess.com)(but not as many [blink] )

I thought someone would have noticed me experimenting with this [mellow]

There is a generic "achievement mechanism" in place now, with as a first test achievement "speed demon":

At first the achievement was for "all time", but just now I changed it to an annual one
(and upped the limits a bit [tongue] )

For now the achievement icon is only shown in the 7 day ranking list.

Thank you for adding another nice feature to this site! I had noticed the new (beautiful) icon on Tuesday, but I was not able to find out what it meaned until your post yesterday.
If you are planning to add some more of them, perhaps it would be nice to add a page where one can see their completed and uncompleted achievements?

Definitely, people need to know the targets [lol]

edit: anyone have ideas for other achievements?

Patrick,
You were the one who said the 21 x 21 you released in 2020 might become an achievement.

The number of gold stars or gold daggers one has earned?
The consecutive number of days a person has solved at least one puzzle?

The winners of the year to date contest, with an icon that specifies the year that they came in first?

yes, this novelty is cool but only a small minority of puzzlers will be able to do these performances (less than 10 at the moment : jpoos, rafaelhoukes, angryclown, occie, starling who are always very very fast and perhaps 1 or 2 others..).
Personally, I've already done these 4 performances but...never the same day and I don't think I'll be able to make it

For this particular one you have to get the times once during the year
(so no requirement to hit them the same day [scared] )

Achievements would be a true/false thing, so solving the 21x21 could be one, yes.

Looking again, as an example, at the chess.com achievements, they have ones like "devoted: logged in 7 days in a row",
and "fanatic: logged in 30 days in a row", or "killer knight: you delivered checkmate with a knight", etc. etc.
(in other words, they don't all have to be super challenging [cool] )

Post Re: achievements
For what it’s worth, I thought I’d throw in my two cents worth. If you’re going to include the 21x21 as an achievement, that means you will have to set up a means of checking that the correct solution has been achieved. If you are going to go to the trouble of doing this, I for one would much prefer to receive an extra 21 points.

Regarding the speed demon achievement, that’s just not going to happen for me unless you introduce some form of age related handicap. And even then ...

I think the next one will be something like "10 consecutive gold stars".

I need to test if all the code can handle multiple achievements anyway.
