fake accounts
( edit: split these posts from the original "DDOS" topic) pnm wrote: Getting many more "dummy accounts" during the past year or so, about 40-50 a month, almost exclusively from Russia for some reason. Still getting the fake account signups from Russia, but far fewer than usual (maybe one a day max these days).

Re: site suffered another DDOS attack
It’s probably because you mentioned the name of the country from which the fake account signups are originating. I’m not going to compound the issue by mentioning the country or the name of the country they have recently invaded.

I'm thinking the whole fake accounts thing is unrelated though, since it's been going on for a long time now. I should add a news feed to the forum pages, presumably this site will get blocked in Russia then

Re: site suffered another DDOS attack
Apart from this increase in fake accounts, I also have to contend with the occasional "abusive account creations". Usually this can be traced back to a school, after which I email the school's IT office, and the problem disappears This time it's someone targeting a specific other person, and all I can do is file an abuse report with the relevant internet service provider.. (and delete the accounts and block the source address of course)

Thank you, Patrick, for being so vigilant about this. Before I retired, I was in IT security for a university, and it was like playing whack-a-mole. Never ending ... Or like an arms race: as soon as you build a good defense, the opponent builds a better weapon.

Re: site suffered another DDOS attack
I disabled new account signups from Russia a few weeks ago, but since then fake Russian accounts have been trickling in from what looks like a compromised network in Sweden
