 efficiency improvements
Some invisible changes: efficiency improvements in the "backend":

the occasional "stalling" of the site (e.g. taking more than 1 minute
to submit a solution) should be a thing of the past now :-)

Yes, and that's a big improvement! During the high-traffic first couple of hours of today and yesterday, the time it took on average for a completed puzzle to be submitted had clearly been reduced, and "stalling" (followed by an error message that there had been three failed attempts at submitting the puzzle), didn't happen to me even once. This makes the site much more appealing to everyone and especially to new puzzlers. [thumbsup]

Site responding very slowly fifteen minutes ago in my browser (Firefox) as well. For more than an hour after today's puzzles went online everything went smoothly, but when I had solved today's 9x9 the automatic attempt at sending my solution timed out after about one minute, and this error message was displayed:

There were 3 attempts to send your solution, and it is still not working.
Our apologies,please try again later.

Because the site was hanging I exited and restarted Firefox. Happily, in spite of the error message my solution had actually been registered and 10 points had been added.

Sounds about the same type of thing with my experience. Also trying to get on the site was also very slow.

I started a pretty detailed monitoring program ("atop") on the server about 2 days ago.
It logs many system parameters, every 20 seconds. I'll be analyzing those today...

Ok, after some analysis, and corresponding with the system administrator of
that server, I think I've figured it out: starting about 00:30 EST, several update/backup
etc. jobs are started on that server, with high priority (!)(meaning they push other
stuff out of the way instead of running only when the server is available).

The administrator reasoned that "00:30 is in the middle of the night anyway, so
no-one is using the system". Never mind that there are 180+ sites hosted on that
server, being used all over the world...

I'm looking into either getting him to set things up in a better way, or move to a single
"VPS" server.

For the interested, here's the load graph of the morning of March 27:

[rolleyes]

Seeing that the server administrator made such a horribly, obviously wrong assessment, annoying thousands of site users over an extended period of time (thus also hurting the sites' standing with current and prospective users) and giving site owners such as yourself headaches responding to user complaints and trying to fix the problems in vain, only to eventually discover the actual cause through extensive analysis and correspondence with the administrator, I wouldn't be too optimistic about having him "set things up in a better way" [lol]

And never mind that not all of us tuck ourselves into bed by 11 PM. Hell, some nights I'm just getting STARTED at 11 PM. [woot]
