Seeing that the server administrator made such a horribly, obviously wrong assessment, annoying thousands of site users over an extended period of time (thus also hurting the sites' standing with current and prospective users) and giving site owners such as yourself headaches responding to user complaints and trying to fix the problems in vain, only to eventually discover the actual cause through extensive analysis and correspondence with the administrator, I wouldn't be too optimistic about having him "set things up in a better way" [lol]

All correct, it's annoying I had to put in so much work to figure this out.

Last night things should have been better (a certain superfluous database backup job was removed).

Tonight it should be considerably better.

That said, I have begone preparing for a transfer to a spare VPS that I have (transfering
to a different server is quite a job in itself...).

Here are load graphs of the past 3 nights (so from top to bottom,
March 28, March 29, March 30). The most important
line is the red one, and it has improved a lot :)

Still a bit of a bump around 00.30.

Here's a higher res graph of last night's load:

Image

As you can see, the load is now uniformly low :-)
(the red line)

Quite a big backup job starts at 00.30, but it doesn't affect the load anymore.

Bonus points if you can explain the anomaly at 02:00 [blink]

And please confirm if you're finding that the site is performing better after about 6.30pm EST ...

A very strange and curious anomaly occurred to me on friday Mar 29, 2013, near 02:00 CET, I received a 6x6 bonus puzzle (asymmetric, from -1 to 4 !!!) :-) :-) :-); anyway thanks for the novelty.

Based on the past 3 weeks or so with the differences in Daylight times,I would hazard a guess that on the North American continent, that time might correspond with users doing puzzles just before supper or just after

I'm guessing that that's when you started Summer Time

There's more and more talk in the EU of abolishing it.

2021 the first "clock change free" year I think.

I just worry that without the extra hour of sunlight every day, agricultural crops won't grow. :-)
