skip loading of Facebook / Google plus / Twitter code
A bit experimental still, so feedback welcome (and for now only available when visiting the site in English or Dutch): a setting on your account page that disables the loading of Facebook/Google+/Twitter code (unless you're logged in via Facebook/Google+ of course), to speed up loading of the puzzle page.
Let me know how it works for you.

Re: skip loading of Facebook / Google plus / Twitter code
This setting works fine for me. It is a welcome addition. If it isn't too much trouble, I would also appreciate a setting for disabling the "news ticker" about the last 20 solved puzzles because its movement tends to disturb the eye a bit when puzzling so I find myself resizing the window several times a day (according to the size of the current puzzle) to avoid seeing it.

Ah, but I like the puzzle ticker so much... Anything for subscribers though, I'll put it in

I too enjoy checking it on occasion how about moving it below the "Tomorrow's puzzles will appear in...." line

"U vraagt, wij draaien" (Dutch for "You ask, we play", as in playing request songs on the radio ) The option to disable the "last 20 solved" ticker should be in there now (English and Dutch language only, still need to translate) (so you can switch to English, try the feature, then switch back to your original language) (note this is also a subscribers-only feature) Patrick

pnm wrote: The option to disable the "last 20 solved" ticker should be in there now I love it!!! Now I can do hard and timed puzzles without there being any "moving parts" breaking my concentration. I also really like the option of setting the country so it won't change if you go on holiday and log in from abroad. pnm wrote: Ah, but I like the puzzle ticker so much... Who knows, maybe I'll miss it eventually and turn it back on to get that real-time experience of working within a big cosmopolitan community of puzzlers.

Re: skip loading of Facebook / Google plus / Twitter code
I'm also replacing all small images on the page with a "CSS sprite" (basically one combined images that is chopped up by the browser), which should result in speedier loading of the page. (6 "icons" and the flags have been done, more to follow..) Patrick Edit: almost all small images have been merged into one, the page should load much faster, even on a full reload (Shift + Ctrl + R on some platforms)

Try to combine and minify css and js files for speedier loading of pages, for example: http://code.google.com/p/minify/

Right, that's another good one, thanks. The bottleneck was the many connections for the 30-40 or so image files though. (still should do something for the flags in the ticker)
