The regular puzzle rankings are also fairly close to a level playing field, but can be distorted by the inclusion of bonus puzzles. A subscriber solving all the 'standard' puzzles will earn 385 points in a week. The extra puzzles are worth 56 or 63 points each week, depending on whether or not Saturday's puzzle is 15x15. Someone averaging 5 points a day on the timed puzzles will therefore average almost exactly 480 points a week, excluding the bonus puzzles.

As the bonus puzzles are available every 250 points for subscribers (and are worth 10 points that are included in the total points tally), this means that a 'typical' subscriber who solves all the puzzles will earn somewhere in the region of 500 points a week on average, including two bonus puzzles. This is borne out by the regular puzzle 7 day rankings, which often show several people tied for first on 405 points.

Someone scoring a lot more than 35 points on the timed puzzles or earning points from book puzzles will have the occasional week when they earn 3 bonus puzzles, bringing their regular points total to 415. The totals can also be distorted from time to time by delays in submitting the 12x12 puzzles or Tuesday's 9x9 or Friday's Killer Sudoku. But that's similar to someone getting themselves temporarily on top of the overall rankings by saving up the extra puzzles.

Just to follow up on the above, I had a look at the points available from the regular puzzles on each day of the week and they are as follows:

Monday 56
Tuesday 58
Wednesday 49
Thursday 60
Friday 55
Saturday 53
Sunday 54

Total 385

There are currently a number of people tied on 594 points for the year to date. This equals 385 + 58 (Tuesday)+ 49 (Wednesday) + 3x10 (Bonus puzzles) + 9x8 (Extra puzzles). It will be interesting to see how many people will manage to maintain a 100% record and for how long. Even if a lot of people do this, gaps will eventually appear at the top of the table as those who score a lot on the timed puzzles or who gain points from submitting book puzzles will get access to more bonus puzzles and will gradually pull ahead of the rest of the field.

Paul

PS: I used to be able to access a list of 'special' puzzles and the days of the week on which they appear. But it doesn't seem to be available any more, or am I missing something?

Edited 11/01/2019 to include extra puzzles in calculation shown above.

The EXTRA puzzles:

Sun: 6 x 6 No Op
Mon: 7 x 7 Twin
Tues: 8 x 8 Exponential
Wed: 10 x 10
Thurs: 7 x 7 Negative Numbers {-3, -2,...3}
Fri: 8 x 8 Twin
Sat: 7 x 7 Twin or 15 x 15

All puzzles worth 8 pts except for the 15 x 15 that is worth 15 pts

The numbers that Paul generated are accurate for subscribers, only.
Non subscribers do not have access to the EXTRA puzzles, and they do not have access to two dailies which seems to rotate, or vary each week.

Edited to correct my error about the Sat Extras.

Thanks eclipsegirl

I think the Saturday extra is a 7x7 twin when it's not a 15x15. Did you generate this manually, or is there a list somewhere on the website?

I generated this manually.
I did it this summer.
I agree I probably did make a mistake with what rotates with the 15 x 15. It seemed odd as I typed it in this morning.

Should I maybe remove the bonus puzzle points from the year-to-date rankings?

To make the "playing field" more even?

(even more even [lol] )

(because people who score more timed bonus points reach the bonus puzzles sooner)

Drat, that foils my evil plan to finish the last book, and get the bonus points and pull ahead of the pack

In reality, I think taking away the bonus points may be a good solution.
It prevents the speedsters from pulling away.
It prevents the people who still have book puzzles from pulling away.

Ok, the bonus puzzle points are no longer included in the "Year To Date" rankings ... [namaste]

Thanks Patrick. It will be interesting to see how many people manage to maintain a 100% record and for how long. There are currently 7 people tied for first place, but a few others close to 100% and I know a few of these have not yet submitted all of today's puzzles. There were 10 tied with about an hour to go last night.

I created a monster. :-)

Sadly I missed out on a few puzzles this year already, mostly due to travel commitments. But among non-subscribing members, still fairly hopeful I can make it to the top 5 by the end of the year (like I did in 2018).
