Post Unable to include zero in pencil marks
I noticed this problem for the first time when attempting a puzzle with zero values within the past couple of days. i assumed it was a one off, so I didn’t bother commenting. But it’s happening again in today’s 8x8 difficult puzzle.

If you use the pencil button to include options in a cell, it won’t allow you to include zero values. If you try to include a zero, it appears as an entry in the cell, rather than a pencil mark.

Not a major issue, but it’s only recently started happening, so I assume it’s a glitch of some sort caused by a recent programming change.

Yes, it's a bug introduced by a bug fix (!)

The fix was for when you have the pencil enabled, then the erase button doesn't do anything
(and you'd expect it would just clear the cell).

I'm thinking the new bug is related to the way Javascript handles zero, "null", and the empty string
(that's a bit of a mess), will check this today..

It should be better now, please check.

In other news, I've recently been getting 10-20 new account signups a day
from bots that are able to bypass the "I am not a robot" test, most of them
from a couple of probably hacked computers in France.

No idea what people want with this, these accounts will never show up anywhere
(because of course the bots then don't suddenly start solving puzzles.. [glare] )

Thanks Patrick. I tend to use pencil marks a lot and not being able to use zero in a pencil mark seemed to cause me a lot of confusion when doing today’s 8x8. It took me a lot longer than usual to complete.

Thank you for fixing this.
I just assumed my iPad keyboard was going wonky.

[thumbsup]

At least Alan Turing would be impressed.

It does seem weird that anyone would be probing this relatively niche website - it's not like they are actually even hacking anything except the capcha (or whatever you are using). I wonder if they are just laying the groundwork for something more involved or nefarious, but I can't guess what that might be. Annoying.

About 50 fake accounts have been created so far (which, again, don't show up anywhere in stats/rankings/etc. etc.)

I dug a little a bit more, have reported the offending sources to the service provider that's hosting them..
